Why DOTS was created

To understand DOTS, it helps to know what came before it. For roughly two decades the sport leaned on the Wilks coefficient, built by Robert Wilks in the mid-1990s and adopted by the International Powerlifting Federation. Wilks was a real improvement on the older Schwartz and Glossbrenner systems, and it served the sport well. But it had been fitted to the competition data available in the 1990s, and as powerlifting grew, statisticians gathered far larger and more current databases. How the DOTS formula works

The DOTS score is produced in two steps, just like Wilks, but with a different curve. First the formula turns your bodyweight into a coefficient. Then it multiplies your total by that coefficient.

The first step uses a fourth-degree polynomial of your bodyweight in kilograms. Call your bodyweight x. The formula uses x, x squared, x cubed, and x to the fourth, each multiplied by its own constant, plus a starting constant. Men and women use different constants because the strength curve differs by sex. That polynomial produces a single number, and the DOTS coefficient is 500 divided by it. Because a heavier bodyweight pushes the polynomial higher, the coefficient shrinks as you get heavier, which is exactly the balancing effect the score needs.

Three worked examples

Example one: scoring one lifter, DOTS next to Wilks

Take a male lifter who weighs 82 kg and totals 600 kg across the three lifts. Feed 82 kg into the men's DOTS polynomial and the calculator returns a coefficient of about 0.680. Multiply the total by it: 600 times 0.680 is roughly 408. So his DOTS score is about 408.

Here is the comparison the score was built for. Two men each total 500 kg. Lifter A weighs 75 kg. Lifter B weighs 100 kg. On raw total they are tied, so who is stronger for their size?

DOTS uses different constants for women, so here is a female example. Take a woman who weighs 60 kg and totals 320 kg. Feed 60 kg into the women's polynomial and the coefficient is about 1.109. Multiply the total: 320 times 1.109 is roughly 355. So her DOTS score is about 355, a strong advanced number.

Notice her coefficient is above 1, which is common for lighter female lifters and simply reflects where the women's curve sits. Now suppose her numbers were recorded in pounds instead, say a bodyweight of about 132 pounds and a total of about 705 pounds.
