Example one: the classic "two plates" at 225 pounds
Let us load a bench press to 225 pounds on a standard 45-pound bar, the famous "two plates". The math: 225 minus 45 is 180 pounds of plates, divided by two is 90 pounds per side. Ninety pounds is cleanly two 45-pound plates on each end. That is why lifters call 225 "two plates", meaning two 45s a side, and 315 "three plates", and 405 "four plates". Each extra 45 per side adds 90 pounds to the total, and the tool names the slang for you when a loading lands on it.
Now vary it. Suppose you want 275 pounds. That is 275 minus 45, which is 230, divided by two, giving 115 pounds per side. For 185 pounds it is 185 minus 45, which is 140, divided by two, so 70 per side, loaded as one 45 plus one 25. Example two: a kilogram platform at 140 kilograms
Kilogram loading follows identical logic with different numbers. Take a 140-kilogram squat on a 20-kilogram competition bar. Subtract the bar: 140 minus 20 is 120 kilograms of plates. Divide by two: 60 kilograms per side. The calculator builds 60 from two 25-kilogram plates, which is 50, plus one 10 to reach 60, on each side. In competition colors that is two red plates and one green plate per end, which is exactly what the drawing shows.
Try a lighter target for contrast. For 60 kilograms on the same bar, that is 60 minus 20, which is 40, divided by two, so 20 kilograms per side, a single blue 20 on each end. For a precise 102.5 kilograms you need 102.5 minus 20, which is 82.5, halved to 41.25 per side, loaded as one 25, one 15, and one 1.25 change plate on each side. That last one shows why change plates exist: without a 1.25 the closest you could get with full plates would be 40 or 42.5 per side, missing 102.5 exactly. Untick the 1.25 in the tool and watch it say so, then show the nearest total it can actually build.
Example three: reading a bar you did not load
The reverse question comes up constantly: you walk up to a loaded barbell and want to know what it weighs. Suppose you see a 45-pound bar with, on each side, one 45, one 25, and one 10. Add the plates on one side: 45 plus 25 plus 10 is 80 pounds. Double it for both ends: 160 pounds of plates. Add the bar: 160 plus 45 is 205 pounds total.

Start with the largest plate that fits into the per-side weight, add as many of those as you can without going over, then move to the next size down, and repeat. For 115 pounds per side that means two 45s first, which is 90, then the biggest plate that fits the remaining 25, which is a single 25, landing exactly on 115. This gives the fewest plates and the cleanest bar, and it puts the heaviest plates innermost, which is the safe, standard loading order.
With a full standard plate set, greedy always finds an exact or nearest answer. The trouble comes with an unusual or very limited plate set, where taking the biggest plate first can block an exact answer that a different mix would reach. Say you own one pair of 35s and two pairs of 25s and nothing else, and you want 145 pounds on a 45-pound bar, so 50 pounds per side. Greedy grabs the 35, then cannot make the remaining 15 and overshoots. Two 25s hit 50 exactly.
